Re:164 LS Alternatives

"I've noticed many signatures that include makes other than ALFA, so I'm
seeking stories about these other "commuter" vehicles. Criteria are as
follows.

Home to office in Seattle: 30+ miles each way

Frequent in city jaunts to customers: 2 - 10 miles

Road trips: Portland (170 miles each way) and Vancouver BC (about 120
miles each way), once per month

Estimated annual miles: 30K

Needs trunk or covered rear area for samples and equipment.

Four door for customer entry and egress as well as simplicity in getting
things out of the back.

Must be automatic.

Prefer cost per mile lower than 24v 164.

Price: What is reasonable? Maybe $15K to $20K. Might go slightly
higher."

We got my wife a '99 A6 Quattro Avant in near new shape with 38k miles
for about $20k. It is a great car with lots of room. I have an A4 and
the back seats are a bit tight. We were able to lay the A6's back seats
down and fit a framed interior door flat in the cargo area with the rear
hatch closed. It is quiet and comfortable, though not particularly
fast. It is roomy, though not to the point of being unwieldy. It is
loaded with the features that a car that originally retailed in the
$40ks would typically have. Also, if you squint just right, it looks
like a 156 Sportwagon in profile.
