Perpetuating the Silly Season (was: 4R Zagato)

Russ Neely, responding to Beatle Bayley's comment about "obscure references to
two different wheelbase versions being available - - Maybe they weren't all
built on the same donor platform" wrote "I also found an article on the
Quattroruote that indicated the last of the cars were built on a 105 chassis.
However, with some research and in talking with people who owned the cars, I
believe that to be incorrect. The 101 and 105 chassis are enough different
that Zagato would have had to retool much of the car to switch chassis."

Fusi lists the 1965 cars as tipo 101.23 (the Giulia Spider type number) with
chassis numbers covering a 296 unit range, but lists the 1966 and 1967 cars as
tipo 105.08 (the Giulia T.I. berlina type number) with chassis numbers
covering a 5,678 unit range. D'Amico & Tabucchi list them all as tipo 101.23,
with all 92 chassis numbers, in a narrow range, individually listed.

Both sources (and presumably all others) contain errors, some more than
others. Individuals have to exercise some judgment. Fusi, one of the best
sources for Alfa data, (but published twenty years earlier than d'A.&T.) is a
likely source for the German article Russ found.

As always, take your pick-
