re: Why does the 164 manual trans use ATF
Two out of three my post-1990 manual cars recommended
using ATF. The trend will probably continue until
all new automatic gearbox use just one universal ATF
and all new manual gearbox use ATF as well.
Great advances has been made in tribology of ATF,
To put it more simply, what is required of modern automatic
gearbox overlapped more simple requirements of manual gearbox.
The anti-foaming additives and additives for clutches and stronger
detergents in automatic gearbox doesn't harm manual gearbox and can
be a plus. The real answer involves tribology and material science
which a short answer will requires writing a booklet if
not a book. One of the simply advantage of ATF is it flows
much better at cold temperature than 75W-90 gear oil. So it is
easier to shift at low temperature, similar benefit of redline
MTL oil, the redline MTL is also applicable to manual gearbox
that requires ATF. I think you can also use 75W-90 gear oil on 164
manual gearbox without any harm but until it warmed up it may
not sift as well. If you must use 75w-90 gear oil on 164, then
I recommed using synthetic gearbox oil because they flow much better.

Subject: Why does the 164 manual trans use ATF?
The prescribed lubricant for the 164 manual transmission is Dexron II = GM
automatic transmission fluid that contains "slippage" compounds. This is the
first manual transmission that I have heard of requiring ATF, but I have
later
learned that it is not the only one. Would anybody enlighten me as to why
the
engineers would want/need to use this type of lubricant?
Cheers,
Sonny
