Wire wheels and Guilietta thumps

I've been lurking as long as I could stand, but now need to apply my 2 cents.

My "62 Guilietta Sprint came with Borrani wires, just like contemporaneous
Ferrarris and Masers.  Molto cool looking.  A splined hub bolted on where the
wheel bolts would have gone, the wire wheel was mounted on the spline and a
triangular knock-off hub held it all together.  The knock-off had the Alfa
cursive logo and an arrow for Smontare (left and right were opposite
directions).

Ultimately the splines gave out and regular wheels were mounted in the rear.
My father sold the car while I was in law school and I never spoke to him
again.

That car also made a pronounced thump in the back, usually at higher speeds
more than low and intermittent.  It was a differential bearing.  The offending
side was changed and the noise disappeared.
