RE: Why ATF in Spider Gear Box ?

This is not an expert speaking..(Ex.. as in used to be. Spurt..as in drip
under pressure)...But, I first came across the ATF in manual gearbox trick in
1987 when my new Golf GTI Mk2 developed a tendency not to engage first or
second when hot. It turned out to be a faulty clutch plate, but the VW dealer
initially insisted it was a 'sticky' gearchange and that ATF would cure it. It
didn't.

I am now given to understand that ATF is quite acceptable in manual gearboxes,
and that being lighter in grade it can improve gearchange quality. I also
understand that because of its lower resistance when cold some manufacturers
use it to improve the cold start emissions cycle test results. Eric Storhok
will perhaps confirm this or say its complete garbage..but thats what I have
been told.

Whether ATF is a 'better' lubricant than a good quality synthetic transmission
oil...well I don't know that either, but I'd have my doubts personally in the
longer term.

Whats the difference between Knowledge and Wisdom? Knowledge is when you know
that a Tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put Tomatos in a fruit
salad.
