GumBall 3000 Rally

I eventually found where the Gumball3000 rally was to
start yesterday, so spend the better part of my lunch
hour in front of the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill, San
Francisco looking at expensive toys....

Unfortunately there were no Alfas.... There was plenty
of Italian steel (carbon fibre? aluminum?) in the
guise of Ferraris - various models, Lamborghini
Countach and Diablos and, I think, a Maserati. Throw
in several Lotus (Loti?), Bentleys (Continental R and
Azzure), a handful of P-911s, a couple of Jaquars. An
interesting display of new cars.

Apparently this is the 5th running of this latest
incarnation of the Cannonball/Gumball Rally - One Lap
of America race. Last year was the reverse commute -
NY to LA, the year before was Moscow to London and I
think another year was Madrid-Monte Carlo-London, or
some such route. The cost for this little jaunt is
GBP 8,000. (includes hotel accommodations, banquets,
meals, but no get out of jail free cards...) Last
years race ended with a party at the Playboy Mansion
in Los Angeles hosted by Hugh Hefner and a collection
of his 'girls'.

This weekends event is San Francisco, Las Vegas,
Tuscon, San Antonio, New Orleans, Miami.

I realize that there is zero Alfa content, but as I
had asked about information, I figured I'd share it
once I knew something
