how were engine numbers stamped?

Anyone know how the engine numbers stamped on the 101-115 blocks were put
on? Was it done by hand, or with some kind of progressive numbering device
like a giant Bates counter? And did the process change when the numbers
moved (at the end of the 1750 run?) from behind the distributor on the
raised boss, to the exhaust-side rear block flange that attaches to the
bellhousing? Is that why the location changed?

I've been looking at a lot of block numbers in furtherance of complete
Berlina Register records and got to thinking about this.
