I'll second the claim that synthetics can cause seal leaks.  I switched to
Mobil 1 in a Moto Guzzo LeMans 1000cc motorcycle engine at abt. 40k miles.
It immediately developed a good leak at the rear main seal.  I switched back
to organic oil in less than 1000 miles, but it was too late.  It leaked
profusely to the extent that I sold the bike rather than pull the
engine/gearbox to install a new seal.  Granted, this was old-seal
technology, but after that experience I would never use synthetic oil
(especially in an Italian engine) unless it was early in it's life.
