Another trick I picked up many years ago:  To remove the inner bearing and
grease seal first remove the outer bearing, nut and washer in the normal
manner.  Then put the nut back on the axle.  Carefully pull the hub outwards
until the bearing surface clears the nut.  Then snatch it solidly.  The grease
seal, inner bearing and nut should remain on the axle and the hub should be in
your hand.  Works great if the inner bearing is a tapered roller.  If it is a
ball bearing like the old VW's sometimes it destroys the bearing and the
seal!!
