There are several problems with putting a 2000 in an early car, all
centering on the bellhousing and flywheel. A 1300 or 1600 flywheel will bolt
to a 1750 and you can use the early bellhousing with its mechanical clutch
linkage. That is why the 1750 is such a popular swap.
The 2000 has six bolts attaching the flywheel to the engine. The
early cars have eight bolts. The bellhousing on the 2000 and the 1750, is
physically larger and may not clear the early transmission tunnel. A very
large hammer might cure that problem. If not, fire up the blue wrench
(cutting torch).
If you want to go to a 2000, use the 2000 transmission and the
hydraulic clutch linkage. On the early 105 cars like yours, later swinging /
hanging pedals could be adapted. That would give you additional header
clearance, but the swinging pedals will cut down on leg room. And you would
loose one of the unique characteristics of the early cars, namely floor
mounted pedals.
The 1969 1750 Alfas all had floor mounted pedals with a hydraulic
clutch. If you can find the pedals, brake and clutch master cylinders out of
a 69, use those.
Or you can fabricate everything.
