The condenser (capacitor) does much more than prevent sparking. It is part
of a resonant circuit that induces a high voltage in the primary of the
coil. A bad condenser will cause the spark voltage to be reduced
considerably.

condenser is in the ignition system to prevent sparking between the breaker
points and maybe excessive sparking prevents the circuit from being
interrupted cleanly when the breaker points open.
