If I'm not mistaken, the spec for North American 164 cars changed over time.
My 1995 specifies 80w90 gear oil (or something close to that), and I believe
the earlier 164 models specified ATF. Local Alfa specialist recommends the
latter recommendation for all model years. (YMMV)

Besides, when you have a leak it will be easier to figure out what system it's
coming from! <joke!>
