'74 Spica Timing

Erik, I'm going to somewhat paraphrase the instructions in my Alfetta
owner's manual: (Should you have the cam cover off, it is easier to see,
but not necessary). It's pretty common for Alfa folk to say when first
timing the engine (as opposed to the Spica) make the cam lobes on #1 go
like this - and then they point their thumbs out. The valves are closed
in this position.

You want to start with #1 at TDC but 360 (or is it 180?) degrees from
thumbs out. Should you be looking at the cam lobes on #1 they will be
pointing toward each other and slightly downward. Should you be looking
down the #1 spark plug hole you will see the shiny surface on the
underneath of the valves (meaning they're both open).

Now rotate the engine Counterclockwise 70 degrees. In other words -
rotate counterclockwise until you see the I (eye) mark on your pulley.
Stop. Make sure it is lined up with your pointer. Then align the
reference mark (notch) on the Spica pump's pulley with the notch in the
center of the upper portion of the pump.

Slip belt on. If notches don't line up perfectly, rotate pump pulley 1/2
notch and then slip belt on. I've used both a Very Gentle heating up of
the belt with a heat gun and / or just a small smear of silicone grease
on the underneath edge of where you're trying to slip it onto the pump's
pulley.

I've been told the mark being slightly off is no big deal.
