ZF auto transmission rebuilder?

Karl Chen asks about 164 ZF auto transmission rebuilders: "Any suggestion on
rebuilder in US or much better in California around Bay Area."

Not exactly the Bay area, nor exactly current, but in January '98 Bob McKeown
of Nashville, TN reported having his 164 box rebuilt by Eriksson Industries in
Connecticut (800-388-4418), who was not formally an authorized ZF rebuilder
but whose quality of service had been vouched for by ZF USA (847-634-3500),
and that the transmission (a ZF 4HP-18) is shared with the Saab 9000, and that
parts for the box are available though but not stocked by ZF distributors. He
also mentioned that Eriksson dyno tests and offers a 1 year, unlimited mileage
warranty on their work.

Reading between the lines it would seem that there is (or at least was) a ZF
USA, ZF distributors as parts sources, and ZF authorized rebuilders as well as
unauthorized but recommended ones, and a Nashville box going to Connecticut
suggests a likely mirror-image, semiwestern boxes being shunted to
ZF-recommended rebuilders probably in California. Haven't checked for ZF on
the internet, but the odds are that they should be there and a good source for
information if nothing better shows up.

Good luck,

John H.
