There is a similar problem with  my '84.  I think it is a fuel delivery problem, and have found that if I turn the key to on, put on
the seat belt and then crank it, it starts right up.  I'm thinking that perhaps the fuel line is not holding or coming up to
pressure correctly.

Check also ALL the vacume lines.
