and a spider's not a 944. in general, you're right, but in the case of
105/115 cars, front body roll contributes to a loss of grip in front, and
increasing the front bar helps keep the tires square. in this case, the
improvement in contact patch more than makes up for the other effects.

i run a shankle super sport front bar in my 1974 GTV with no other
suspension upgrades, and it works quite well.

additionally, if you're autocrossing with the SCCA in stock classes, shock
absorbers and the front sway bar are about the only permitted changes in
the suspension.
