torsion bar suspension

So I'm looking at the suspension of my 116 Giulietta, and thinking that I've never worked on torsion bar suspension before, so I don't know what those things will do if I start dismantling them. My Haynes workshop manual makes it sound dead easy, but I'm suspicious. Are they likely to fly off and kill me when the tension on them is released? And if I get them off, retaining all of my important digits/eyes/limbs, am I going to be able to get it all back together again? Without special tools?

regards,
Anthony
