Re: 1.8 turbo in a 74 spider???

Hi Guys:

Before you get too hyped up over the 1.8 (or 2.0) Turbo in a Spider, I've seen the engine as originally installed in a Nuova Giulia, and I can't see any way that it's going to fit in a Spider engine bay. One problem would obviously be height, as the plumbing from the compressor side of the turbo runs over the cam covers to the intake plenum. Maybe that plumbing could be switched to run over the water pump, like the old Bobcor setup, but that's a guess. More important would be the width of the setup, on both sides. The turbo hangs pretty far off the exhaust side and the intake plenum does the same on the opposite side. I'm talking about a dual Weber version I saw, and don't know if there's a Bosch-injected engine that might be narrower. Fitting this engine in a 105 GTV would be tight, but I don't think you'd even be able to lower it much past the fenders in a Spider. Just look at how tight the original engine is. Sometimes eyeball measurements can be deceiving, but I think the width is a real problem.

Regards,

Dean

I've wondered the same thing, and I imagine that the answer is yes,
but I don't have enough 4cyl experience to know for sure.
