Re: 1750 rebuild
Your best bet is to upgrade to a 2L engine. My understanding is that the
"early" 1750 engines in the 69 model year differed from the later (71?)
1750 engines in that they do not have offset piston pins. This offset in
the piston pin allows for greater low end torque. Later 1750 and the 2L
engines utilized the offset piston pin design. My personal experience is
from my'69 GTV with the early model 1750 engine. When I blew a head gasket
I upgraded to a 2L engine (carbs and everything else the same) and found a
MUCH stronger engine, particularly with regard to low end torque. Later I
rebuilt that 1750, with a rering and reusing the piston/liners, and put it
into a Berlina. The engine and car has always been gutless off the
line. I also have 2 other Berlinas, both with 2L engine - and one is a
beater - and the superior torque of the 2L is easy to feel in those cars
over the early 1750 powered Berlina.
(striking a match)...the best use for 1750s is as an upgrade to a 1600 (and
1300?) vehicles because the crankshaft will accept the 1600 (1300?)
flywheel and then it is a bolt in. By the same token, the 2L is the best
way for easy speed in a 1750 vehicle, because it too is an easy bolt in
upgrade. IMHO....YMMV...etc..

Subject: 1750 re-build mods?
I am buying a 71 Berlina. The current owner is doing an engine swap (taking
the re-built 1750 out of the Berlina and installing it into a 69 GTV, and
swapping that engine into the Berlina). I am having the head taken off and
inspected and may very well have a valve job while it is out on the bench.
The gearbox is in very good shape so I have no worries there. The 71 Ingram
rebuilt SPICA stays with my car.
As long as I am considering doing the head on the motor, are there any
performance mods for sporty daily mountain driving I should consider?
... My knowledgeable friends tell me I will love the feel
of a 1750 as is..I appreciate any comments.
