RE: Alternator woes
When looking for a problem with poor charging, it is essential to use a
good instrument to measure how great a voltage is reaching the battery.
I suggest every Alfa owner purchase a digital VOM, volt-ohm-meter at
Radio Shack. Inexpensive and small enough to keep in the glove box.
Read voltages at the BATTERY only in the morning before starting, then
right after the engine fires at idle speed or whatever the cold start
gives you. You should read 12.6 volts for a fully charged battery and
over 14 volts at idle but NOT MORE than14.6. Maximum design voltage
for the Bosch systems is 16 volts, not good for long life of the lights
and electronics. A sulfated battery will not take a charge so don't
fool around, buy a GOOD one, cheap is false economy. Before you remove
the alternator to take to a good shop, test with a known good battery.
