Something else you might want to explore is whether the noise you're
hearing is coming from the timing chain rubbing against the interior of the
head. I know that sounds scary, but it's not unheard of for chain
tensioners to come free from the locking bolt allowing the chain enough
slack to start removing aluminum.iagnosing with the screw driver as a
stethoscope will tell the tale. The fix is pretty straight forward if this
is the situation. If it is the problem and you need help, just ask. 
As Russ indicates, water pump failures are most often identified with water
seping fromthe weephole on the shaft housing. As Russ also indicated, the
water pump you saw on E-bay bears no resemlence to a 2 litre pump as used
on your spider.
