bad roads and damage

My 168(4) was damaged about 7 years ago by a manhole cover forced out in a
heavy downpour. It damaged about 6 cars. After spending the day on the phone
while the town and county debated about who owned it, (with the correct
approach), the town guy told me they had been flipping the cover in for the
county for a year, and it was supposed to be welded in. He was willing to go
on the record that the cover was reported as an issue to the county. The
county risk management guy, who was very nice, replied, "oh, that one.... I
ordered that fixed 6 months ago".

You may get some jibberish that they are not liable until informed of the
flaw. Be polite, professional and firm. I had a check in 1 week, and 3 MONTHS
of rental car while the rocker panel was dragged over from Italy. Repairs,
$2500, rental car $2600. Tax dollars. (self insured). Talk to the risk
management department of the town it's in, but likely it's a state issue.

Good luck. I don't care what car it is, the roads should stop it.
