Re; paint codes- - '69 red
Joe Elliott asks "A digest-impaired (or should I say lazy) friend of mine is
having his '69 Spider painted and wants to know the paint code for any shades
of red that would be appropriate to the '69 Spider, as well as generic Alfa
Red, Rosso Corsa, etc. Can anyone with an archive of paint chips hook me up
with this information, or direct me to a some sort web site that would have
red paint samples?"
Two web sites and one Alfa shop manual. Wille R. will certainly be reposting
the address of his web site which has many, probably most reds, used by Alfa,
and I believe Chris Boles also has a copious list on his site, but the factory
body shop manual #1570 covering Giulia and 1750 models, published September
1970, lists just three reds, 501, 509, and 514. 514, called Rosso Italia PF or
Farina Red in the shop manual, and called Signal Red or Rosso Semaforo on some
later color chip cards, is the only red which would have been on a '69 Spider.
The 501, called Alfa Red or Rosso Alfa in the shop manual, would have been on
the Arese cars, the Berlinas and 105 coupes, although also used on some later
Spiders. The 509, called Amaranth or Rosso Amaranto in the shop manual but
also called Plum, shows up in color lists for the sedans and coupes but not
Spiders; with very few exceptions Spider paint colors ar PF colors, shared
with other Pininfarina cars but not with Arese Alfas. Most, though not all,
Alfa paints were supplied by Italver, the Italian branch of PPG which
corresponds to Ditzler in the US; the Ditzler code for 514 is 72051; the
corresponding DuPont code is 8770. Usually any US paint supplier can
cross-reference any Ditzler number.
"Generic Alfa red" is not a term I would use, and "Rosso Corsa" is not a term
I have ever seen used by Alfa or an Alfa subsidiary.
