1974 GTV starter question

I have a 1974 GTV with a later starter on it.  Recently it has begun to
exhibit the following behavior on an intermident basis.  When you turn the
key
on the starter will begin to crank and sometimes will have a breif "pause"
then continue cranking and the car starts.  The brief pause is very short in
duration, much less than a second.  Does anyone have any idea what this could
be?  The starter has about 25K miles on it.
