Re: GTV questions (gas smell)
Hi,
The rubber boot that surrounds the gas tank neck and the filler
opening has probably got cracks in it. The boot also has a short tail
molded into it that should stick down through the truck floor, letting
overflow leak to the outside of the car. It may have pulled out of the
hole. The boot is a tight fit around the filler flap. You might get lucky
gluing any cracks closed with cyanoacrylate glue, but the tension could
cause the old rubber to split again. New boots may be available. Try
Hurtienne if sources on this side of the pond don't have any.
Worst case, you might have small leaks around the gas tank flange
itself allowing gas to puddle in the little well in the trunk floor. It's
probably a good time to replace all the rubber hose in your system, too,
just to be sure.
Good luck,
