Re: GTV6 inboard brakes - why?
The theory goes, I believe, that reducing "unsprung" weight - by using
light alloy wheels, moving the brake mechanism inboard, and so on -
allows the moving assembly containing the wheel to respond more quickly
and precisely to changes in the road surface it is following, thus
keeping the tire in more effective contact with the road, certainly a
benefit in hard cornering. Physics dictates that a heavier wheel
assembly would develop more inertia when put in motion in an upward
direction by a bump in the road surface and the wheel would develop
reduced adhesion to the surface or even leave the surface in extreme
cases. This tendency to "remain in motion" is reduced by a lighter
moving mechanism, and of course by shock absorbers (dampers) which also
work to reduce the "overshoot" of suspension travel, keeping the rubber
on the road where it belongs. So there are sound technical reasons for
the inboard brakes - and the light alloy wheels! --- Peter Westafer---
