Re: Mech tensioner
I just couldn't stay out of this topic...especially since some people here
are new(ish). Rules to live by (culled from past Digests, AlfaBill, and
personal experience):
Cardinal Rule: never, never, ever allow a mech tensioner-equipped engine to
turn backwards! Not a centimeter, not 2 degrees. Don't park on even minor
upward slopes leaving the car in gear without setting the parking brake! (If
your rear calipers leak...and you know who you are, Milano and GTV6
owners...leave it in reverse, instead.)
Cheap Insurance (as stated in AD 1119): Yes! Replace the tensioner at each
timing belt change!
Orange Box: the only tensioners which should be put into your cars come in
orange boxes with the Alfa logo all over them. This type is available from
an Alfa dealer or affiliate. Don't buy them any other way -- only buy OEM.
Follow instructions: follow the instructions in the tech bulletin to the
letter! Never over-tighten or under-tighten them. Yes, I know it can be a
big PITA, but it's your engine's life on the line.
Keep them covered: don't skimp on the belt covers. If they are tired,
replace the covers too.
Dunno what else to say...all I know is that the belt/tensioner replacement
is the first thing I do to any V6 Alfa I take into my stable.
Lastly: Don't be jealous of the Volvos (and many others) designed so valves
and pistons never meet. Many, if not most, contemporary OHC engines suffer
the same risks. I've heard tales of horror from owners of German, Japanese
and American cars regarding the time that their pistons kissed valves.
