(because of pressure) or due to some sort of variation in the mixture
atomization because of the different pressure?

Pressure pretty much is the function here. Higher pressure = denser gas, and the denser it is the higher
the voltage it takes to jump the same gap. Like Fred determined.. it's a basic Physics fact.

So if you have higher compression, turbocharge or supercharge, use a cold air ram intake, or
put a leafblower fan in front of your air filter... you will to a larger or smaller amount, (well, I don't
know about that last one! ) ;-) increase your net pressure before ignition, and require a larger
striking voltage for that plug gap. Also, for the same engine, going from idle to high speeds will
to a point, put more volume into the cylinder, for a higher pressure.. which is why at high RPM,
you may need a better ignition system. (one of a few reasons, anyway)

Ususally you have quite a lot of excess voltage.. and the standard system can cope with it.
