Thanks to all for the advice and info. on the fan. I suspect that , with
ambient air temp. at 115 deg, being parked on a blacktop parking lot and
with the hood closed, the actual ambient air temp. under hood could easily
have been over 150 deg. Since the sensor works on air temp., not coolant
temp., that pretty well explains it. Also, recently, when I ran the car thru
smog check to license it in Calif., the fan went on again. This time,
however, when I had driven the car a few blocks, it turned off. In this
case, the air temp. was only around 80 deg. Q.E.D.
