Re: alfa-digest V8 #991

I wasn't watching my mechanic when he did it, but obviously, on my car, the balancing nuts either came off, or were scrambled the last time somebody had the assembly apart. I was in the car, up on his lift, when he did it, but it was obviously trial and error. He would have me start the car and blip the throttle several times, then he would tell me to turn it off. Then he would fiddle under there for a few seconds and ask me to restart. It must not be all that difficult, because balancing my shaft took less than 15 minutes all-told.

Subject: RE: Driveshaft Balance

Technical bulletin 89.01. dated May 1, 1989

"During assembly of the GTV-6 and Milano models of Alfa Romeo, the
factory precision balances the driveshaft on the car. The balance of
the driveshaft is adjusted by using different thickness nuts and/or two
nuts on one bolt. (See Fig. 1)"

"All hardware and driveshaft components MUST be refitted exactly as the
factory assembled them."

"Whenever removing or disconnecting the driveshaft from the vehicle mark
the position of ALL mounting hardware and driveshaft components so that
they can be returned to their original position to preserve driveshaft
balance."

So there it is - all you have to do is look!

I've forwarded copies of the TSB to John off-line. If others are
interested, lemme know, however it's pretty much the text I copied plus
a pic of the drive shaft and hardware, nothing special.

Now the REAL question would be.. what's the balancing procedure?

I'm wondering if there might be a not too special equipment way to do
this, like use a timing or strobe
light to freeze it and "see" how it vibrates, and know where to add
some weight..
