Frankenbumper

Frankenbumper

Tony Sims cued me in on the question of Richard Welty's Frankenbumper.

The die-cast zinc alloy "awning" plate light was used on the US-variant 1974
GT Veloce and Berlina and on the US Alfetta berlinas, but as far as I can tell
not on any of the world versions of those or any other cars; the world-version
Alfetta berlinas and Giulietta Nuovas continued to use two small flat
bumper-mounted lights which were descendants of the two small domes used on
Giulietta Spiders and many other Alfas of the late fifties/early sixties. A
wide light housing over the plate is not without precedent, had been used on
the 1900 Berlina and Giulietta berlina, and there were other variations, but
two on the bumper was the norm. I assume that the 1974 US change was a
consequence of the adoption of rubber DOT bumpers for the Berlina and the
Alfettas, with the GT Veloce (which, being a "two seater", was exempt from the
bumper rules) changed to keep the rubber-bumper Berlina company.

I have a '74 GT Veloce rear center section which may or may not be usable,
will check its condition tomorrow, if it is usable Richard is welcome to it
either as a trade for his holed one or as a freebie.
