valve spring dilemma

It turns out that the factory valve spring compressor is designed to 
work on a V6 only with the heads off the car, which is not part of my 
plan.  Apparently the thing that the tool levers on is supposed to go 
down the spark plug hole and thread into a nut on the other side of 
the head (in the combustion chamber).  So what I need to do is come 
up with something else that the tool can lever on, that I can attach 
to something else in the V6 head (the plug wells are pretty much out 
of the question because I need to attach the air compressor there to 
keep the valves shut when I take the springs out.
