Re: spider gas vapors
Greg,
Thank you for your response. Since reading your email, I did some further
investigation and I want to share to all what I found. Your explanation of
the vapor recovery was great and it helped me to solve the problem.
1. I verified that the small diameter hose with a check valve connected
terminated to the engine crankcase ventilation hose. It is full of liquid
gas. I purged the line by removing both ends from the check valve and from
the ventilation hose. I used a blow gun. Gasoline spurted out of the
ventilation hose end.
2. I removed both hoses that connected to the side of the plastic vapor
recovery tank in the trunk. After removing the lowest hose, gasoline leaked
all over. There must have been about half a cup of gas. The upper hose
connected to the gas tank. The lower hose connected to the crankcase
ventilation hose. This DID NOT make sense. Someone mistakenly swapped the
hoses. (This car was previously painted.) In theory, the lower hose should
connect to the gas tank and any liquid should go back down to the tank. The
upper hose should be connected to the crankcase ventilation hose. Vapors
that come up from the tank will then be sucked from the upper hose and travel
to the crankcase ventilation hose. The vapor can then be sucked into the
intake manifold to get burned. I verified while the engine is running that a
vacuum was present in the crankcase ventilation hose that is attached to the
upper side of the plastic recovery tank.
3. I believe the odor in the trunk was coming from the 1/2 cup of gasoline
swishing inside the plastic tank.
4. To be safe I will change the oil immediately just in case gasoline got in
the mix of the crankcase.
Thanks for your help.
