164 idle solenoid

Is hunting for idle when ac is on and bad smell in exhaust consistent with 
bad idle solenoid?
Id did happen right after i had the intake runners out for a valve 
adjustment, but i rechecked the seal on those 3 times and tried spraying carb 
cleaner on them to check for idle variations... nothing.
I checked the other 2 hoses, the one that goes to the oil separator, and the 
one that takes the fumes from the cam cover, and the one that feeds the idle 
solenoid, and the bellow that connects to the airflow meter, checked 
operation of the meter and wiped the dirt from inside the intake manifold at 
the butterfly, to insure proper closure. Furthermore, I have removed the 
plastic hose that goes to the brake booster and pressure tested it, and tried 
clamping shut the hose to fuel pressure regulator and to that sphere for 
cruise control. The idle is fine when cold, varies very little up and down 
when warm and a bit more when fankicks in, but she can't hold it when the AC 
is on and the temperature is high.
