Problem with twinspark engine

Hello everbody,

I drive a Alfa 146 with a twinspark 16V engine.

Lately I hear a loud ticking / rattling noise from the engine. Especially between 1500 - 2000 rpm and during startup. A colleague from work thinks it a problem with a polluted valve initiator (for lack of a better word).  What he meant was the "thing" that pushes the valves, not the valve itself.

He told me there a additives you add to the oil that could correct this, he thought it was called ATF or TAF.

My question: does anyone have or has had a similar problem and how was it resolved and what is the additive called?
