Re: 164 Brake Light Problem

Mark,

I have a 91S and had several brake light problems that drove me crazey.
Here are some of the possibilities. First, it is seldom the switches at the
pedal but instead either the relay or the lights themselves. The brake
light relay is located in the engine compartment in the middle but slightly
left (driver side) behind the firewall and under the plastic cover. Make
sure this relay is working (just substitue one with the same number contacts
from the fuse box), if not, it is often just dirty contacts - contact
cleaner or WD 40 works. You will also get the lights if the one or more of
the bulbs is/are bad or not making contact. Most people use the 2 filament
"1056" but the heavier duty "2056" last longer. If you are getting no
lights, I would put odds on the relay.
