Yet another "tea tray" theory...
I seem to recall hearing somewhere that the reason for the "tea tray" on the GTV6's was strictly a production issue - IIRC, the sheetmetal couldn't stretch sufficiently when the hood (bonnet) was stamped, due to the hood bulge. They could have welded in a filler piece and blended the seam, but the tea tray was a faster and cheaper fix.
This made sense to me at the time - the "tea tray" is unique to the GTV6, as is the hood bulge.
But then again, I could be completely wrong...
