In theory, you're supposed to pull the pump off the car to change the
switch. It would be easier to put the pump back on than it would be to
switch over to carbs..
The Spica notes (AROC) describe a procedure for changing the switch with the
pump in the car. Might be worth the $20 just for that. I've never tried
it.

The vintage of the car doesn't mean much wrt oil consumption, the mileage of
the car does.
1 qt every 450 - 500 miles seems on the high side. On medium/high mileage
Alfas, I see 1 qt every 1000 - 1500 miles.
Keep that STP sludge out of the engine.
