Peter, Hollywood Machine Shop, located in Pasadena. 2210 E Walnut.
626-449-7060. Ask for Steve (the owner).
He's very knowledgeable with Alfa engines. Might well try to talk you
into more than just having the head milled. Your choice, but I always
tell Steve to mill it no more than necessary.
The only major difference from the '79 I know of is with the 'flywheel'
(the one on the engine of course). While I've not looked at the one on
the '79 I have, the mounting for the front donut must be different than
on the 75's. I'm guessing the studs are farther apart and quite possibly
there are other differences.
Should you decide to mix-and-match engine parts, make sure you either
don't end up with a block and oil pan both with oil dipstick housings,
or with a block and oil pan with no place for a dipstick.
While he didn't phrase it quite this way, John Hertzman straightened me
out on this little idiosyncrasy several years ago.
I don't believe there is any special 'trick' things on the '79 engine,
but perhaps others will chime in.
115-120 'dry' compression seems a bit low, but as you indicate, it
appears to be even throughout and only increases slightly with oil
poured in the cylindersshould be okay.
Unless you're on a really tight budget, I'd definitely have Steve
install new guides and the better valve seals. He can install the
springs, cams, bigger valves, etc. should you want. Be prepared for a
fairly hefty bill at the end though.
The recent consensus for best head gasket is Reinz. Several of us
wondered where to get them. In the recent AlfaOwner (my first in many a
year), Ereminas Imports (1-800-253-2468) lists engine gasket sets with
Reinz head gaskets for 'most' 4-cylinders from $86.50 to $89.90.
