English tradition (as recorded in the classic "1066 And All That" version of
English history as it should have been taught in the schools) has it that
Caesar made this pithy, accurate and immortal remark when he invaded
England, but you have to remember that in Latin "v" is pronounced as "w".
Consequently, it's not surprising that the English were affronted at being
called "weeny, weedy and weaky", and put up a stout resistance.  At least
until they ran out of stout... but that's another story.
