RE: Steering gear removal help needed
Ed, You need to remove the headers, as the steering shaft is firmly
attached to the steering box, unless you have one of those with a
u-joint, which my 74 Spider didn't have.
Procedure is (by memory):
Steering wheel off
Light switch off
2 clamps below the shaft inside the car off, 17mm wrench, there are
torque specs on these on reassembly
Loosen 1 8mm nut, don't tighten this one too much whey you reassemble
2 screws by the floor to loosen the rubber gasket
Header off!!! There is not enough room for the box to come out otherwise
Overflow bottle out of the way
Lift the car up at the front
Detach the drop arm 32 mm - use an air - torque is 100 ft/lbs
Detach steering box by the 3 bolts, remember the spacers and where they
go back
Wiggle the box to the right angle and it comes right out with the shaft
attached
One suggestion is to get a hold of the maintenance manual for the Giulia
105 series car, the procedure is quite well described there.
I have removed mine twice now and it takes about a day for r&r.
So get new exhaust gaskets while you are at it.

Subject: Steering gear removal help needed
OK, I'm trying to remove the steering gear in my 1974 Spider, US car,
left hand drive. Its supposed to slide out but I don't see how. Steering
wheel is off, the shaft clamp just below the steering wheel is loose.
Steering gear bolts are out and the idler arm is off. The gear has
moved and isn't fastened in, it is however tight. I expect dirt or rust
on the steering shaft but thats ok, I can deal with it being tight. My
problem is that I see no way at all this thing can slide out far
enough to allow the steering shaft to slip out. I pulled the gear down
and it hits a hard brake line just before it would hit the upper
control arms inside mounting point. I could probably spin the steering
gear if I remove my headers but even with that I don't see the gear
coming out. Whats the secret? Removing the header will require cutting
the exhaust pipe so I'd like to avoid that but if I'm sure thats all I
need then ok, I'll cut the pipe and remove the header. Can someone who
has done this on a left hand drive Spider let me know what I need to
do?
