V6 detensioner replacements (again)

digesters,

my third mechanical detensioner has broken (2.5L v6),
fortunately while i was rotating it back to adjust the
timing (which had slipped a tooth since my last check
5k miles ago). the first one ruined valves, and the
second broke while installing it (no harm done).

clearly it's time to turn my back on this POS design.
are there any other options than tom zat's stay-belt
(which i'm not opposed to, but does look a little
ugly)?
