164 24v Camshaft Pulley Removal Question?

I'm having fun trying to remove the Cam pulleys on the V6. Car Disc says
"Remove pulleys using plastic mallet". Well my mallet is rubber, but it may as
well be a rubber chicken for all the success I've had so far. Is it
permissible/acceptable to use a puller to get the cam pulleys off.

Advice and/or suggestions please (The rubber chicken is going on the barbecue
in about half and hour)
