battery life

I  had good luck/results with the die hard in my Alfetta.  It lived
seven years, after I bought the car.  It, too, is located in the trunk.
I presume that, away from the under-hood heat, it survives better than
if it had to heat cycle with the motor.

VW believes this, too.  My VR6 GTI had (gotta get it replaced) battery
insulation jacket.  It gets very hot under the hood, and VW jacketed the
batteries so they could live longer.  It still only made it 4 years
before it died a catastophic death (a dead cell).

Bottom line?  I believe, also, that the move to the trunk, away from the
heat of the exhaust, etc, under the hood, may do more for battery life
than the type of battery.  I might surmise that Mazda went to a gel-cell
because it is sealed, and getting acid over personal stuff in the trunk
of the car is not a good image builder for the company.
