115 GTV headlight trim rings

ok, i need some suggestions.

i need to get the left headlight out so i can look at/clean up the
connections; the low beam comes on, but is dim by comparison with the
right side headlamp.

the owners manual (now you know why i pulled my car disc out and fired it
up) says to pull on the bottom of the trim ring.

the left side ring doesn't seem to budge. i got the right side ring off by
turning it (like a bayonet mount), and the collection of tabs certainly
suggests a bayonet style mount. i can't get the left side to turn, either.

it's not a good place to apply leverage; there's a lot of painted surface,
and easily bent sheet metal around there. anybody got any suggestions?
