1982 GTV-6: diagnosing charging system?

we're getting very close to getting both my 1973 GTV and my wife's 1982
GTV-6 back on the road as summer daily drivers.

this afternoon, when i went to fire up the GTV-6 for the first time in a
little while, i got a little suprise.

previously, when started, the battery light stayed on until i blipped the
throttle to energize the alternator.

the battery had run down enough so that i needed a charger to start the
car. it started nicely, but i couldn't get the battery light to go out. the
car idled nicely until the battery went flat.

i've not diagnosed a charging system in a very long time. could someone
please suggest the steps i need to go through?
