Chris,

You don't have to go off line, you just need to have an autoresponder
set up to reply to all mails from the Digest. There are, however, those
who would get mighty pissed off :-) (Not necessarily myself, as I don't
get the digest, but the individual emails, and I can just delete them
with a Rule in Outlook.)
