In my 1986 spider Quad, I never heard the clicking.  It suddenly quit while
cruising at 70 on the Interstate.  The distributor shaft had so much play
that the rotor had punched two holes in the distributor cap.  The force
transmitted back down the distributor shaft had sheared off the pin holding
the drive gear on the oil pump shaft.  I ended up replacing both the oil
pump and the distributor.  And replacing the oil pump in the car with only
the lower sump removed was not fun!  So, save your oil pump and replace the
distributor before it causes more damage.
