Yeah, I forgot to mention a couple of things that I take into account 
re: towing.

I try to avoid any tongue loads on nasty German rear suspensions.

The more rubber in the drivetrain, the less towing I do with a given vehicle.

Follow the 2:1 mass rule for tow vehicles with automatic trannies.

e.g.:

Flat-towing only behind the 735i

Emergency towing only behind triple-giubo transaxle Alfas.

Mom's 3500lb automatic Volvo doesn't see much towing and doesn't have 
a hitch, despite being otherwise ideal by my standards.
