Strangely enough, I had this condition in 3 of my cars. In the Alfa
Spider, it was a plugged vent hose in the trunk (next to the
canister/tank connection). In the 66 Mustang, the tank itself had a few
pinhole leaks and this made the whole interior smell like a 76 gas
station (I had to get a new tank, cheap enough for a stang). On the
164s, it was mych tougher, as it was the combination (and coincidence)
of fuel filler hose (not fixed under recall) and a fuel hose leak near
the plenum waftingh in through the HVAC (can you say "4th of July"?).
In the Milano, you got the tank behind the seats, and still a couple of
these leads would apply...
